A shopping mall is being built only 30 metres away from Auschwitz. 1,600,000
people -- 1,000,000 of them Jews -- were murdered at Auschwitz.
Two international agreements forbid any construction at Auschwitz. - One
is the 1972 UN Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and National
Heritage. - The other is a 1979 UNESCO agreement which declared Auschwitz
as a "historical site and place of human testimony," creating
a 500 metre buffer zone around the camp's grounds.
Do not be misled by reports that the construction has been cancelled! *
The Polish Government has only announced a *temporary* suspension, * and
Jewish groups at the site have reported that construction has resumed.
